Seeing Through New Eyes

O yes am seeing my "little" town of Orange Walk (its not that little) through new eyes, the eyes of a tourist who doesn't know the place and asks questions and does all that is possible to interact with people and culture.

As I do this I am now realizing that, yes, I should be a tourist here, why not, it's a beautiful place all the more beautiful because it is off the beaten track of tourists and commercialization of our culture.

I have been to very many different places, in Belize and abroad, where the main industry is tourism, where there are souvenir shops and tacky offers of all sorts, and I thoroughly enjoy it, but I also enjoy being able to get the feel of a place, its people, its normal, every day life.

....and that is what you get here in Orange Walk.  Where people are friendly and can direct you to their favourite haunts just because they enjoy it and realize that you would too.

As I spontaneously decided yesterday to eat in town as opposed to going home to my picturesque little village of Palmar, I decided I would do just that.  Ask a person, any person, where they would recommend to go have a nice plate of food, that is filling without it being too expensive, where there is a good ambiance and I can relax.

Guess where I was directed to unanimously as I asked 3 random people on the street?:  Nahil Mayab.

Well I certainly enjoyed my meal there and was told by the very friendly staff to go ahead and take as many pictures as I wanted.   So here are a few of them .   As I continue my travels of being tourist in my country I will post some places that I have visited previously and when I do so I will mention that these were done on another date.

Today I also had a nice little session with my cousin and her cousin and I am posting those pictures here too.

We spent a leisurely hour in Icebreak in the middle of town for some frappuccino and smoothies and desserts.  (spoiling our appetites before dinner, but hey we are not always out are we?)
(Sidenote:  they have free wifi for customers)
